Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
The GVW is the maximum allowable weight of your vehicle on the road. It includes the vehicle itself, the driver, fuel and cargo. GVW classifications include:
Trucks:
- Light-duty: up to 15,000 lbs.
- Medium-duty: 15,001 to 26,000 lbs.
- Heavy-duty: 26,001 lbs. or greater
Tractors/trailers:
- Single-axle: typically 55,000 to 65,000 lbs.
- Tandem-axle: typically 80,000 lbs.
Keep in mind that drivers of light-, and medium-duty trucks typically do not need a commercial driver's license (CDL). However, to drive a heavy-duty truck, tractor, trailer, or you will need a CDL.
