Purchasing a Truck
How do I buy a truck from Penske?
When you find the used truck that meets your needs, contact us at 866-309-1962. Once an offer is agreed upon, a Penske associate will contact you to complete the sales process and your purchase will be in "ready-to-go" condition, thanks to our rigorous used vehicle prep process.
Six easy steps:
- There is a verbal agreement of sale
- Customer must sign and return the bill of sale
- Once the bill of sale is received, Penske will start the vehicle preparation process
- Once the vehicle is ready, the payment is submitted to Penske
- Once the payment clears, the original title will be mailed to you
- A Penske associate will schedule the vehicle pick-up with you and the Penske location
For financing, visit our financing page.
How do I submit the payment?
We accept two forms of payment - a certified bank check or a wire transfer. A Penske associate will provide you with the wire transfer or mailing instructions at the time of sale.
Is there a warranty available?
We offer an optional warranty through National Truck Protection (NTP). For more information visit our warranty page.
After Your Purchase
How do I pick up my vehicle?
Penske will provide you with the contact information to the location where the vehicle is parked. You will need to take your driver's license, the signed bill of sale, and vehicle registration to the Penske location for pick-up.
How do I register the vehicle?
Depending on state requirements, you will need the title, bill of sale and proof of insurance. Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for details.
Do I have to pay sales tax?
If you are purchasing and registering the vehicle in one of the following states, you will need to pay the appropriate state, county, local, city, and other taxes to Penske based upon the address the buyer supplied as the title, registration and plating address unless your organization is exempt from paying state sales tax (documentation required):
|
|
If you are purchasing and registering the vehicle in a state not listed above, you will pay the appropriate state sales tax to the DMV at the time of registration. Sales tax will not be included on the Penske bill of sale.
If you are purchasing the vehicle from one of the states listed above but registering it in a different state, then an out-of-state affidavit form will be sent by Penske to you and you will need to complete this form and return it to Penske before the bill of sale is created and we begin/complete the vehicle preparation process.
What is an out-of-state affidavit form?
An out-of-state affidavit form is a document that needs to be signed in which you acknowledge that you are purchasing the vehicle from one state and immediately transporting it to another state for registration. Penske may remove state sales tax from the bill of sale in this case, unless the state of pick up and the state of registration require tax to be collected by Penske.
Sales tax will be collected by the DMV at the time of registration.
Are all of your vehicles ready for immediate pick-up?
Some vehicles may be immediately available but many still have to go through the vehicle preparation process. In many cases, our vehicles are "active" until the point of sale. For this reason, it may take several weeks for the vehicle to undergo a pre-sale inspection and be ready for pick-up.
A Penske associate will contact you when the vehicle is ready for pick-up.
Operating Your Vehicle
What are the legal guidelines for vehicle operation?
Operating a vehicle for commercial purposes is different than operating one for personal use. Generally, a vehicle or combination tractor and trailer exceeding a GVW of 26,000 pounds requires special licensing and registration. Laws governing legal operation, such as physical exams, drug testing and hours-of-service logs differ for commercial applications. For more details, contact your state's department of transportation.
What does GVW stand for?
GVW stands for gross vehicle weight. It represents the maximum allowable total weight of your vehicle on the road. GVW includes the weight of the vehicle - combined tractor and trailer, if applicable - the driver, fuel and cargo. GVW classifications are:
Trucks:
- Light-duty: up to 15,000 pounds
- Medium-duty: 15,001 to 26,000 pounds
- Heavy-duty: 26,001 pounds or greater
Tractors/trailers:
- Single-axle: 45,000 to 65,000 pounds
- Tandem-axle: 45,000 to 80,000 pounds
Are there any additional accessories that may be needed?
Cargo that is temperature sensitive will need a temperature-controlled unit. Street-level delivery may require a lift gate, walk ramp or side door. Securing devices in the truck body will stabilize your load. Choosing a bench seat versus a bucket seat in the cab may affect efficiency.
Maintenance
Is there a maintenance plan after the sale?
We have a variety of contract maintenance plans. For more information on maintenance plans, call 888-563-6448.
What is the average age of a Penske used vehicle?
Most trucks and tractors are three to six years old. Trailers are generally eight to 12 years old.
What other optional features does Penske offer?
Our maintenance and commitment to quality ensures you'll be happy with the mechanical condition of your purchase. Penske can provide optional features like painting or lettering. We can also provide a service to bring the vehicle to you. If you are interested in any of these options, please contact us at 866-309-1962.
Penske's Inventory
Where does Penske's inventory come from?
Penske operates approximately 160,000 lease and rental vehicles at any given time and roughly 15 percent of them are sold each year. Our vehicles are sold to the public once they return. We often list our vehicles for sale slightly in advance to them returning from lease.
What is the vehicle preparation process?
Once a vehicle is returned from lease, Penske prepares the vehicle for sale. The vehicle is cleaned, the decals are removed and a complete vehicle pre-sale inspection is performed. Penske will notify you when the out-service has been completed and it is ready for pick-up.
